Barrel Coffee Table with Lift Top

My mother-in-law sent me a picture of this barrel coffee table years before I actually built it because she thought I could sell them and maybe build her one. I was not able to build it at the time due to lack of resources but I always kept it in mind. About 4 years later I was able to surprise her with one for christmas! I love testing my skills and expanding my knowledge by making gifts for people.

The oak barrel was purchased from Hardywood Brewery in Richmond, VA. I cut it in half and made two coffee tables. The top and base are white oak. All was stained and sprayed with a lacquer. The top lifts forward to comfortably eat dinner at the couch and conveniently store items inside the base. One table went to her and the other went to my grandparents who gave me the wood for the tops.
